14 May What Does a Wedding Celebrant Actually Do?

There is a bit of a running joke that a wedding celebrant just rocks up, reads from a fancy folder for twenty minutes, and then heads straight for the grazing table. If that were the case, picking a celebrant would be as simple as finding a nice pair of shoes or a handbag you liked the look of.
In reality, the ceremony you see is just the tip of the iceberg! A professional celebrant is a legal officer, a scriptwriter, and a professional vibe master all rolled into one. Here at Janda Events, we see ourselves as part of your team, making sure you’re actually hitched at the end of the day without any of the legal stress.
Whether you’re getting married at a hidden Gold Coast hinterland spot or a rooftop in the Brisbane CBD, here is exactly what goes on behind the scenes and why it’s important to find the right wedding celebrant.
The Boring (But Crucial) Legal Stuff
This is the part where we put on our professional hats. In Australia, the legal side of getting married is pretty strict. One tiny mistake on a form can cause a massive headache later on, so we take care of the heavy lifting to keep you out of the paperwork weeds.
1. The Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM)
This is the big one. You need to lodge your NOIM with us at least one month before your wedding date. We handle the lodgement, double-check your ID (passports, birth certificates, the works), and make sure everything is squared away well before you’re walking down the aisle.
2. The Must-Say Words
To make things official, the Marriage Act 1961 requires a few specific things to be said. This includes the Monitum (the legal definition of marriage) and your legal vows. Our job is to weave these into your story so seamlessly that they don’t feel like a legal checklist, but just part of the moment.
3. Making it Official
After the party is over and you’re off on your honeymoon, we’re still working. We submit all your signed docs to the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. We make sure the state knows you’re officially a team so that when you’re ready to apply for your official certificate or change your name, everything is ready to go.
We also find that plenty of brides and grooms are choosing to make things official before their wedding day, so we can also take care of this step before you’re actually walking down the aisle.
Nailing the Vibe
While the legal bits are non-negotiable, the rest of the ceremony is a blank canvas. This is where we get to have some fun and really welcome you into the Janda Fam.
We don’t do boring, “insert name here” templates. We spend time getting to know you, including the way you met, the weird quirks of your relationship, and exactly how you want the day to feel. Some of our couples want a ceremony that feels like a stand-up comedy set, while others want something short, sweet, and focused on getting to the bar.
The Janda Journey includes:
- Writing your story: Crafting a script that sounds like you, not a law textbook – nor a cringe fest.
- Vow support: If the idea of writing vows makes you sweat, we’ve got your back with guides and tips to help you nail it.
- Setting the tone: We’re the first point of contact for your guests, making sure everyone is hyped and ready for when you make your entrance.
The On-the-Day Hustle
The few hours before you walk down the aisle can be a bit of a whirlwind. You’re likely tucked away prepping with your bridal party, and we’re about to pay you a visit. There’s one last legal declaration you need to make pre-ceremony, so we usually come give you a hug or a high-five and get this autograph while you’re in the final throes of bridal prep. Then we head to the ceremony site at your venue to make sure the gears are turning.
We aren’t just standing at the front looking pretty (though we absolutely try to match your style on that front too). We’re checking the PA system so your guests aren’t straining to hear, and we’re chatting with your photographer and videographer to make sure they’re across the ceremony flow and set up for the best shots. Think of us as the calm centre of the storm: we handle the logistics and the “is the ring bearer actually here?” checks so you can just focus on each other.
They can do so much more than just marry you!
Part of the Janda Benefit, is working with a wedding celebrant who can do it all! Our two awesome celebrants, Jake and Lei, can do more than just officiate your wedding! They can also act as your wedding musicians, MC or DJ to help create a seamless, and cost effective, experience from “I do” right through to the dance floor. Our bundled wedding packages are designed to simplify planning while keeping the vibe consistent across every part of the day.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a celebrant cost in South East Queensland?
You’ll see prices all over the shop, but for a pro who spends 15+ hours on your wedding, you’re usually looking at $1,000 to $2,000. It covers all the legalities, the writing, the travel, and the gear.
Do we really need a rehearsal?
We don’t think so, no. Even the term itself feels like it’s trying add pressure and make this a performance. We prefer ‘recon’. We suggest simply jumping on a video call, or meeting for coffee, and calmly chatting over the key points. At the end of the day (well, at the start of it) we want you to have just one thing on your mind; breath and walk, and go with the flow. Having said that, if you think putting boots-on-the-ground will mitigate stress (and not add ito it), and you want us there – we’re there.
What if your celebrant gets sick?
Don’t stress. One of the unique benefits of working with Janda Events is that we have two celebrants in-house! Failing that, we have a truly solid network of legendary celebrants in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. If an emergency happens, we’ll have a backup ready to step in with all your paperwork in hand.
Can a mate marry us?
Technically, no. Only a registered celebrant can do the legal bits. But, a popular option is having a friend tell your story while we handle the legal must-haves. We call this a Co-Pilot Ceremony. It’s a great way to keep it personal while ensuring everything is still legal and legit.
Why Local Knowledge Wins
Choosing a wedding celebrant who knows the local area makes a world of difference. We know which Gold Coast beaches get too windy in the afternoon and which Brisbane venues have the best acoustics. That local intel saves a lot of stress.
At Janda Events, we’re all about making the ‘official’ part of your wedding the best part. We take care of the boring bits with total precision so you can get on with the celebration.
